Wilshire Crest's Garden School Foundation program

With just 170 students, Wilshire Crest is an intimate neighborhood school serving central Los Angeles for over 80 years. Our mission is to create an environment where all children, including those with special needs, can achieve their maximum potential through the positive support of community members, parents, staff, teachers, and students. Wilshire Crest has also recently launched an exciting new Spanish/English Language Immersion program. The school’s gardens were conceived by a passionate group of committed parents and teachers who broke ground in 2009. A much larger ¼-acre learning garden was then added, and Garden School became the programming partner in 2013. The Wilshire Crest gardens have a special focus on water conservation and sustainability, using ollas, hugelkultur, and drip irrigation.

As a Korean-American, I was raised eating lots of healthy Korean food in the suburbs of Los Angeles without ever really knowing where healthy food came from. It wasn't until I went to college in rural MA that I started learning about the negative effects of today's farming practices on our physical and environmental health. My senior biology seminar in Sustainable Agricultural Ecology inspired me to pursue garden education, and now I am thrilled to be working with Garden School Foundation in inner-city Los Angeles, teaching gardening and cooking classes to Wilshire Crest Elementary students.
